Training Description:
This training will explore Motivational Interviewing’s (MI’s) foundation to help practitioners
understand its’ efficacy and begin to build their confidence around dissemination.

  1. Definition of MI (i.e., Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered, evidence-based,
goal- oriented method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and
    resolving ambivalence within the individual).
  2. Background of MI (with consideration paid to the creators of the model and recent
    developments)
  3. MI Spirit: (PACE: Partnership, Acceptance, Compassion, Evocation): an overview of the
core values that are adopted when utilizing MI
  4. MI Underlying Assumptions (e.g., empowering clients to make a choice)
  5. MI General Principles: REDS (Roll with resistance, Express empathy, Develop
    discrepancy, Support Self-efficacy)
  6. The Practice of MI
    • a. Core skills: OARS (Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections,
      Summaries)
    • b. Informing and Advising (I)
  7. The Process of Change (Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, Planning)
    • a. The signs of readiness to change and change-talk
      • i. DARNCAT (Desire, Ability, Reasons, Need, Commitment, Action
        Taken, Take Steps)
  8. Tools to Evoke Change
    • a. Readiness Ruler
    • b. Decisional Balance
  9. MI Overview to highlight key points to remember

Objectives:
MI is only effective and beneficial when there is contemplation about change; once ambivalence
is recognized, the model hones in on empowering the client to make decisions that are aligned
with improving quality of life. Through the seminar and engaging in experiential exercises,
trainees will learn to:

  • Elicit behavior change by helping another person to explore and resolve ambivalence
  • Establishing a helpful connection in which the client feels respected, open and heard
  • Focus mostly on future possibilities related to a specific issue
  • Evoke clients’ sense of importance and confidence about change while helping to resolve
    lingering ambivalence
*Individuals must attend the entire presentation and submit a presentation evaluation in order to receive their CEs/CEUs.  A certificate of attendance awarding CEs/CEUs will not be emailed to attendees under any circumstances.
