Introduction to Infant/Early Childhood Mental Health Core Concepts
Presenters: Susan Dickstein, PhD, IMH-E® and Maryann Lynch, BA, IMH-E®
Date: April 29, 2022 (9am-noon virtual delivery)
The science of infant/early childhood mental health (IECMH) is clear that the relationships that babies and young children experience with their parents and other significant caregivers are foundational for healthy brain development. Early relationships set the stage for health, mental health, and learning for a lifetime. The infant/family workforce is made up of cross-sector professionals who serve infants, young children and their families across a continuum of care. We deliver developmentally appropriate and family-focused services that serve to promote mental health wellness, prevent poor outcomes in challenging circumstances, and/or intervene when symptoms arise. The key to success involves strengthening relationships that exist a) between the young child and family; b) among all family members who care for the child; and c) between the family and their community providers. It is critical that we center this work around issues of racial equity, diversity, inclusion and access to promote positive relationships for thriving and healing. This 3-hour seminar provides an overview of core IECMH principles and reflective practices, and introduces IECMH Endorsement®, an internationally recognized workforce credential affirming specialized infant/early childhood knowledge and skills.
