Description of Presentation

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy offers clinicians exciting new tools and perspectives to get unstuck and accelerate change.  Developed by world-renowned researcher Steven Hayes (and numerous collaborators) ACT offers an empirically grounded framework for understanding and repairing the underlying causes of our clients’ suffering.

ACT differs from many other therapeutic modalities in that it focuses on helping clients clarify and move toward what is most personal meaningful in their lives.  Symptom reduction is not emphasized, but often comes about naturally as clients get ‘unstuck’ and begin to redirect energy away from ineffective strategies to control and avoid their pain … and toward the behaviors that grow their lives in valued directions.

To this end, ACT offers a set of innovative interventions that directly target the underlying psychological processes that contribute to psychological well-being and the capacity to flexibly respond to whatever arises while engaging in valued-living.  Clinicians can also benefit from the application of these principles to our moment by moment experiences in-session with our clients; becoming more open, aware and effective.

This training will combine didactic presentation with experiential exercises to provide direct experience with the basics of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Learning Objectives

After completing this seminar, participants should be able to:

      • Understand the history and context from which Acceptance and Commitment Therapy evolved;
      • Be able to articulate the basics of Relational Frame Theory (RFT), the basic science of human language and verbal behavior from which ACT emerges;
      • Apply ACT’s six Core Psychological Processes to form trans-diagnostic case conceptualizations that get to heart of your clients’ suffering;
      • Practice specific interventions that you can integrate into your existing clinical practice that help clients shift their relationship to their pain and get moving toward valued living;
      • Experience the application of ACT to your direct experience with clients to unpack counter-transference and other potential barriers;
      • Learn about paid and free resources for continued exploration and training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

    *Individuals must attend the entire presentation and submit a presentation evaluation in order to receive their CEs/CEUs.
