Activity Description
Depression and anxiety are treatable medical conditions and older adults are at an increased risk for experiencing them. It is common for patients to be over/under medicated and ongoing monitoring of medications is especially important in this population. This workshop will focus on the assessment and management of medication related to anxiety and depression in older adults, increasing the understanding of medication management for anxiety and depression so that health care providers can better address concerns and needs of their patients.
Program Objectives
1. Discuss epidemiologic data on prevalence of depression and anxiety in late life in both community and nursing home settings.
2. Describe major medication classes used in the treatment of late-life anxiety and depression, including antidepressants, sedative-hypnotics, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics
3. Discuss unique features relevant to medication management in late-life, including comorbid dementia, medical problems, substance use, delirium, sensory deficits and psychosocial triggers.
