Abstract: Our society has often turned a blind eye to trauma’s impact on males and subsequently trauma has been focused on as a “women’s issue.” The social assumption of men being perpetrators of trauma and the social acceptability of male trauma and violence has led to desensitization to the effect of trauma on men. As a result, there have been continuing cycles of trauma that continue to negatively impact our society as a whole. This has never been truer than in the realm of trauma treatment, where historically research has been done and interventions designed on female populations. This presentation will offer a look at trauma-informed practice that is responsive to the unique challenges and strengths of men.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to describe the impact of male socialization on a man’s treatment experience
2. Participants will be able to conceptualize a case study from a male responsive trauma-informed framework.
3. Participants will be able to design intervention strategies to address specific areas of need in working with men to enhance engagement and success.
