Description

This three-hour workshop gives a basic framework for working with couples. This includes an overall perspective on relationships as well as evaluation, treatment, and ending therapy. We also discuss the myths that most of us currently have about relationships which hinder our work with couples. Additionally, we discuss different “types” of couples we might encounter as well as interventions/strategies for working with each. This presentation also includes information about special populations such as couples who have encountered domestic violence, addiction and an affair.

Objectives

  • Understand and apply a new perspective on working with couples
  • Understand the many myths about relationships we have been taught that
get in the way of our interventions
  • Be able to break down, step by step, a process for working with and
    helping couples
  • Learn how to help clients who feel powerless change their relationships and
show them how to “lead” their relationships into health without being
    domineering or controlling
  • Learn to apply the principles of growth and evolving processes in relationships
  • Demonstrate how to help clients make a decision to stay in their relationship or leave
  • Work with only one member of a couple to affect change in a relationship
